04 Z71 front overhead console

Hello All,

I will be installing a new head unit with external mic in my 04 Z71 Tahoe. I would like to put the mic in place of the onstar mic. To do this I would like to remove this console so I have full access. I have come across several videos but I am unsure.

What is the process to remove this? It seems that many trucks have a screw in the front of it, near the windshield and you just pull it down/unsnap it from there. Is that true for this truck?

I'm thinking about doing the same, but wish there was a way I could wire the Onstar button on the wheel to perform a different function afterwards.

I am giving up on the steering wheel controls myself. Mine are pretty faded, they do work, but I just don't use them often. I am always reaching over to the stereo. I can always add them in later if I miss them. I have just gotten into alot of money with this truck and I need to recover a bit. I bought it at a good price, but after tires, all the (total) brakes, front end work (tierods and sway bar links), cluster work(had cluster rebuilt and climate control), shocks, flushes I've done myself...its gotten crazy. Not to mention the new bumper and grille I have bought and all the materials for super flush of radiator... wow. I think that it will be super nice when I get all this done, but it still needs a good cleaning inside, and probably the carpet, at least in the front and back seats area, needs replaced I am in deep. Its rust free pretty much everywhere except the front bumper and a few little nicks on the hood that I am going to sand and touchup. I am in the middle of deciding if this is a restoration or making it a solid driving truck...in the middle now lol.

It adds up quick, thats for sure. I just had to do both front brakes, all shocks, and tires (ended up buying wheels AND tires) and now I need to rebuild the front transaxle, and flush fluids in front diff and transmission, as well as rebuild all the front end components with new bushings and linkages. That doesn't even include the HUD replacement, or all the gaskets and seals that need to be done (combating a rather serious head gasket leak). It's taking a lot of money, but I know once those things are done, it will be a solid and reliable daily driver for years to come, but right now it feels like its never ending.

EXACTLY!!!! I need to do my front end as well. My dad knows a mobile mechanic and I am thinking about getting all the new parts - minus the sway bar links and 1 tierod, and having him redo it. I would need another alignment but hey! I also bought a new set of headlights and market lights too lol. I have not even start on the front Dif yet...I am worried...the 4x4 worked when I tried it but thats as far as I got. I would love to have the front end done. I also need WHEELS badly, mine look awful! My wife says my birthday she will look into it. But I want to stay OE size so my new tires will fit and I want rims that wont rust. Phew it never ends. I also bought a new thermostat lol.... You guys are so great - thanks for making me feel better man.
