If that linkage was mesded up, that definitely would've been best case scenario. I messed up the linkage once in my old Express van--I ran over a huge cone--and it had a similar issue that you had. Did you look really good at the plastic ends on it?
Yup looked in perfect condition

Could be your needle isn't correctly aligned up at the console. The cable may be good, but it might need to be adjusted.

If it was my 84 K30 sure but this is digital, somehow the gear selector tells the gauge cluster electronically what gear it's in.

The other day I got in the wifes 05 Denali and put in drive but it felt more like it was in Neutral so I stopped from rolling put it in neutral than back to drive and all was well. My wife told me she was at the car wash and put it in neutral but it acted like it was in reverse.

Anyone else seen this? Gear selector getting worn or transmission or something else?
Sounds to me like it's the neutral safety switch where the linkage hooks up. They are known to go out.

I've replace several though the years in my nbs vehicles.

You may have thought the truck was in Drive and in reality it was in Neutral.
