I have an 07 Denali and when I open the rear hatch, it only opens a 1/3 of the way when I use the remote, button inside, or door handle and then goes back closed. Even when the hatch is open and I push the button to close it, it goes down a little bit and then back up. Do I need to replace the support struts on both sides of the hatch? This problem is getting annoying. Thanks.

I think there might be something wrong with the obstruction sensor on your truck.
It might be something as simple as replacing it.

I sounds like your struts are bad. The extra weight of the hatch fools the system and makes it think you have hit an obstruction which is why the hatch closes. When the hatch starts to open assist it by hand to remove some of the weight and see if it opens all of the way. When the struts are bad and the door is all of the way open it usually will drop a few inches and then close slowly per the manual so I don't know why yours goes back up.

Even if one strut was bad I don't see how it would be able to stay up on its own. It wouldn't hurt to check them, but I would think that your problem of it going back up after closing a little would be more related to a bad obstruction sensor.

Sometimes the thing works perfect. Most of the time it opens half way or maybe not even half and then goes shut. I'll have to check the struts and maybe replace the obstruction sensor. Its just annoying trying to put something in the back and it keeps closing. Im not really thinking its struts because the hatch stays up when its completely open

wheatbeast,

It may be the object sensor or the position sensor. These are just suggestions, it is not a diagnosis. I encourage you to take the vehicle in to have the liftgate wiring harness inspected. Your certified technician should be able to offer a more accurate diagnosis after a physical inspection.

Keep us posted.
