Well, yesterday I just lost 3rd and 4th gear in my 07 4x4 Tahoe with 58,700 on the clock!

It started out not shifting into 4th the night before and the following day I took it out and got on the gas and the engine went to redline instantly!

I was able to shift down to 2nd and limp it to the shop, luckily I was close to home when this happened!

I believe it probably has the 4l60e?

I took great care of this vehicle, it was never abused, I just can't believe this thing has failed!

I am not sure if I should fix it and get rid of it or swap in a 4l80e or some other heavy duty trans and keep it?

Any suggestions?

6l60e if I'm not mistaken. Sounds like a cracked shell ..? If it was faulty solenoids you'd get an engine code. My advice is get one built up nice and beefy so if you want to super or turbo charge in the future , that part is out of the way

The 4L60E's can be built/re-built to withstand quite a bit of power if the right parts are used. From the sounds of your losing 3rd and 4th... the associated bands for those gears are likely destroyed and hopefully the remainder of the internals can be salvaged. A TCM re-tune will likely be necessary to optimize any aftermarket parts (but this service is also offered by transmission shops). If I experienced this type of failure, and since the truck is down anyway, I'd consider a higher stall converter, high performance re-build and a retune of both the engine and transmission.

Did you buy the Tahoe brand new? Do you do any towing by chance?

Shop is installing a new GM transmission and converter(3yr/100,000 warranty), gonna set me back around $2300.

I don't do any towing or hauling heavy loads, off roading etc.

A built-up transmission was very appealing, but I don't have the funds for one from the major performance transmission outfits and I don't have time for a local shop to rebuild the original one.

BE CAREFUL THAT IT'S NOT JUST A REBUILT TRANSMISSION....IF THEY ARE SELLING NEW, ASK THEM TO PROVE IT CAME FROM GM.

Not sorry for the caps. :)

agreed that does sound cheap for a "new" trans.
But that sound like a lot for a rebuilt one. I know someone who just got a rebuilt one installed for 1700 with upgraded torque converter. Verify It is new because they just change random crap on a rebuilt one. They don't change the servos and the harness usually cause problems later on. Yes it sucks it went out but 4l60e is a dime a dozen and very cheap to work on compaired to most trans.

Anything specific to the 4l60e and towing or just the general added stress of towing?

I tow my race car with only the stock little tranny cooler. I've never seen tranny temps over 196 degrees but I'll be towing down to FLA from Boston this Fall and don't want to burn it up.
