2001 5.3L Yukon. I noticed she has been running at 185* for the past few weeks. Shouldn't she be at 210* during normal driving?

Yeah, mine is always just left of top dead center which I believe is 210! Might have a thermostat sticking, I had one fail on the denali years back luckily in the open position so it is possible!

Guys, can really use some more input here. I'm reading online that it might not be a thermostat problem and can be a problem with pressure in the system or coolant. Any input would be great before I start trying a bunch of different things to fix the issue. A few weeks ago I parked on a very steep decline and threw a coolant error as a result, could this have caused air in the system?

Thanks

When the truck is running and fully warmed up, do you have heat coming out of the heater and if so is it hot or luke warm? Is your coolant resevoir topped off and full? With the truck running and fully warm, does your upper and lower hoses feel hot to the touch and equal to each other?

Never heard of 185° being too cool, idk. Mine runs about that, I think. I worry when it gets to the 210°, for me that's too hot. Thermostat temp is at 185°, so I think that's about where it should be. My gauge says 210° is top dead center, and I run left of it.

Heat seems pretty good, hot air.

Coolant tank is above the middle (looks like where the top of the tank meets the bottom half). Is this supposed to be more full? I can't find an indicator line on it.

Can't check the hoses right now bc it's pouring where I am, but I hooked up my scanner and the coolant temp is 149*F. My temp guage in the dash is on the 3rd line past 160 (~178*?). IAT sensor is reading 77*F. Fuel system 1 and 2 are closed.

From the looks of your gauge pic and the reading you are getting from your scanner, I'd say your thermostat is a tad messed up! If that's the case, it may be kinda stuck open now but might stick the other way and you don't want that! If you haven't done a thermostat in a while or ever on your truck, that would be the first thing I'd do! Just my opinion!

Another thing I thought of, when it's full warmed up and your driving it's that temp but when you come to a stop and idle for a minute or so does the temp ever creep up at all? Does your heater work better when idling and when driving does it get colder at all?

Heat seems consistent and the temp on the gauge doesn't creep up at all. I'll try to replace the thermostat tomorrow, but should I also replace the temp sensor since my gauge shows a different reading than the scanner?
Thanks for the help!

I don't know man, from your answers it's not exactly sounding like a thermostat problem but it still could be! I'd think your scanner is getting the same reading your coolant gauge would be reading from so not sure why it would be reading that different!
When looking at your pic of the gauges, our truck runs a notch cooler than 210 so I'd say mine run (or shows on the gauge) 200 and yours is quite a bit cooler than mine and alot of other trucks on here! Did you just get this truck and its been this way or did it switch to this cooler reading recently? What was it reading prior? What year is your truck?

Sorry for all the extra questions, would rather overthink stuff than have someone do work that didn't need to be performed!

Hey Whiteout and YukonXLPerk, have you guys seen his pic of his gauges and does yours run at that temp or does it run a notch before the 210 mark like mine?
