1995 Tahoe ignition switch issues
1995 Tahoe ignition switch issues

My daughter called and had trouble turning the key in the ignition, After about 1/2 hour of jiggling the key, trying to tirn the steering wheel back and forth & adjust the tilt up and down the key finally turned.

The ignition switch was replaced about 4 years ago. The switch was replaced with an OEM GM switch.

She is using the most often used key - the original OEM. We haven't compared keys yet.

We might have one that is not as worn if that is possibly the problem

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks

it is the key and lock cylinder itself try a different key maybe even flip the key over can help. Instructions for replacement if you are stuck in locked mode below.

Ignition Lock Cylinder - Seized/Won't Rotate The procedure has been updated by TSB# 73-01-09

  1. On G, J and N Models: DO NOT REMOVE THE STEERING COLUMN as indicated in the Service Manual procedure.

    1. Remove the tilt lever, upper and lower column covers.

    1. Drill hole in module housing as indicated in the illustration using a short drill bit (1/8" followed by 9/32") and 90 degree drill motor or go degree drill attachment to break or access the retaining spring for the lock cylinder button, see Figure 2.
    2. Using a pick or needle nose pliers, remove the retaining spring from the hole.
    3. Using pliers, grasp and remove the retaining button for the cylinder.
    4. Remove the cylinder from the housing.
    5. Follow the procedures in the General Information Section of the appropriate vehicle Service Manual when recoding of cylinders is required.
    6. Install the new cylinder and reinstall the steering column components.

  1. On U, W, and light duty trucks, follow the Service Manual procedure for keys missing, or cylinders won't rotate.

And if key works. You might want to disconnect the battery unless you want truck running the whole time:

  1. Lift upper shroud (10) to gain access to lock cylinder hole.

    1. Hold key in "START" position.
    2. Using 1/16-inch allen wrench push on lock cylinder retaining pin.
    3. Release key to "RUN" position and pull steering column lock cylinder set (17)from lock module assembly (15).
install:

    1. Key installed in lock cylinder (17) and in "RUN" position.

Ensure sector in lock module assembly (15) is in "RUN" position.
    1. Lock cylinder (17) to upper shroud (10).
    2. Line up locking tab and positioning tab with slots in lock module assembly (15) and push cylinder (17) into position.

I believe that it's just start and run. I replaced mine, and mine was. But mine is a '95.. I don't think they added any security chips until the NBS

Yea, too many times the key not turning is blamed on the ignition switch when in fact it is the key tumbler causing problems. You could still have an ignition switch problem but is likely the tumbler. If you change out with new and the old key unlocked the doors as well as started it then now you have two keys for all that.
