Ok I inherited a 1997 gmc yukon 4x4 and i drove it for around 8 months and it was always long drives 1hr + each way to work if not longer

Since I got it it would vibrate from time to time and stop when I would either let off the gas a little or press gas a little more

It never seemed to get worse

Well about 7-8 months ago I was driving down the interstate and noticed smoke coming from behind me.... lots of smoke. The transmission was leaking on the exhaust cross pipe

I was told by a few people that it sounded like the torque convertor was going bad and the vibration wore the front seal

Does this sound correct? Its been sitting for a while now because I didnt have the time to mess with it. I want to start fixing it now that I have a little time off work and I cant afford a shop to fix it. I have dropped a transmission in a 1990 4x4 toyota pickup before to change clutch before and I have a heavy duty lowpro trans jack...

If it sound like the converter and front seal needs to be replaced can I drop the trans and transfer case as one or do I need to separate. Just looking for the easiest way to fix it. Never really messed with an automatic transmission before

Thanks in advance

Better to seperate them as it is easier to wrangle out. And it does sound like the pump or converter hub seal is bad. This can happen when the bushings in front work their way out so be prepared to maybe replace them. Obviously any damaged part must be replaced.

with the right tools easy. the tool needed will depend on the part you are removing. not all need them. For example the turbine housing seal which is on the input shaft and goes into the converter is an o-ring i believe but the installer tool prevent damaging the seals. the bushing are typically done with a basic bushing tool kit.

Ok so im at a stand still trying to get the transmission out.
I have removed both drive shafts
Transmission brace
starter
torque converter bolts

Cant get to the top bellhousing bolts and in order to lower the transmission im gonna have to remove the transfer case cause the tail of it is hitting the crossbrace with thr torsion bars in it.

I removed 5 of the 6 transfer case bolts and I dont know about getting under it enough to get the top bolt out. If I remove the top bolt is the transfer case gonna come off and land on me???? Or is there a shaft that goes inside it or thd transmission that will keep it from falling once I take the last bolt off???

I just dont want to get under it and take the bolt out and it fall on me

I have my transmission jack under the transmission pan

Shaft from the tranny to the trans case, it's longer than the studs if I remember correctly.

there will be a little bit of shaft to help but that is pushing it. put some bolts back in the bell housing and move the jack to the t-case. don't risk damaging the shaft. or other bushing/bearings.
