Update: He replaced the timing chain and gear, dropped the oil pan and cleaned it out now it runs like new.

Hopefully it runs another 100,000 miles.

That’s awesome! Glad that’s all it was. Now, start a build thread and get to work!

I'm far from a mechanic. I can change a flat, change the oil, rotate the tires and that's about it.

I do need to do those things to it. I'll see if I can upload some pictures.

Nice! My dad had a pewter 1999 Tahoe LT. Bought it brand new. Looked exactly like that one!

is it a nut or bolt. A timing gear bolt could have backed out if not properly torqed. A nut? I just can't see getting in there. if it were dropped from the top of the motor. It would cause extensive damage and possibly seize the motor which could snap a timing chain. I know this is old but you need to pull the motor either way to check for damage. Pull the oil pan and look for copper shavings in the bottom. Turn the engine of course by hand at the crank to be sure it's free. Do a compression test. I'd do all of this before pulling the motor. The pan is a pain on these as you have to drop the exhaust and the front differential. ****** design. Also you'll have to replace the plastic timing cover along with the pan gasket. You might consider a better pan and windage tray while you have it off.

Nice looks exactly like mine. I got mine for 500 with cracked heads. It had been rebuilt and only 29k on the rebuild and surprisingly rust free in the midwest. I rebuiltthe top end and upgraded everything. Now I have 4k into it and probably not done. Money pit for sure but it didn't need to cost so much I'm just a gear head.
