Same here. I aim between the hitch cover and right exhaust. My kid loves to try to open it.

Kinda don’t understand the issues with the foot actuator tailgate light. I kick in and out right over the light, and it works every time. It’s the only way I open the tailgate when I’m outside. You kick the letters …it never misses…..

I tried your method earlier today and it worked perfect. Kicked straight in and out at ground level where the GMC light would be (daylight and can't see it at all) and the hatch popped right open. It appears it's been operator error for me all this time waving my foot all over the place
