Hello and Help!
I'm in the process of removing the 4l60e from my 93' Yukon GT. Lost reverse and 2nd gear about the same time, with rev. working at high rpm's for a while, now not at all. The rig still drives forward.
While dropping the pan to drain (no drain plug on these) I found the filter loose in the bottom of the pan...Question is, could misplaced filter be causing any of the shift problems? Should I replace filter/fluid and try? Or just continue to remove for replacement w reman?
Thanks!!

the loss of second and reverse says the sunshell may have broken. if so that is an automatic tear-down. Would not hurt to try a new filter to see what happens tho.

If the filter was in the pan when you dropped it you were running that pump with out any fluid. My first rebuild I put in a deep pan and that happened, the filter fell out, pump went boom.

Agree that symptoms point to sunshell, but wondering witch if any problems could be attributed to misplaced filter??
How can I tell if pump went? Didn't make any noises when failure started...replacing filter and fluid today...will post results.

Noise is one but a complete failure of any function of the tranny is the big sign. If you have some gears that are working your pump is pumping something thru it.

The symptoms don't point to the sunshell, if your sunshell breaks you basically disconnect the output shaft from the rear sun/planetary gear so that's not it, you would loose all gears except park.

Its possible your filter fell out and there was enough connection between the pump and filter to create enough suction to keep fluid going thru the circuits but not enough to create the needed line pressure to keep it in gear.

Reference: I've blown a sunshell and dropped a filter out of a pump.
