hard turn to one side is a bad steering box.

How many hours will a mechanic charge to replace one? My '05 Tahoe has a lose of power steering when I make a right turn from a complete stop. This has happened twice now. Changing the gear box is probably not something a non-mechanic can easily do.

labor charge will be around $100 per hour @ 2-hours I would say.

but the garage is going to run the bill up on a new unit and PSF. I stopped taking my vehicles to the garage when I learned that I could buy the parts for 1/2 the price I was being charged for whatever was acquired per line items of the bill.

10FC445E-CA48-4502-B9B3-5336743E4977.png op stop dont by a gear box. I thought the same thing when mine crapped out. But it was evo valve in the back of the pump. You need to get the by pass that does away with that valve. The pic is what you need. Some of the guys here have stated that turning right but not left is a bad gear box that may be true in some cases but the evo being bad will give the same problems. When mine went out the pump started whining so I replaced it clueless about the evo valve. Reinstalled the new pump problems got worse. Learned about by pass Pulled the pump again and installed it and problems resolved.

Funny you should ask, but the belt sometimes makes a squeaking noise when cold.. It only does this once in a while. Are they connected?

How can I test that evo valve? I don't want to waste money blindly replacing parts.

Not sure of a way to test it but look at it this way. Your looking at putting a gear box in. Well which is the cheaper of the two?

I had a similar issue with my truck. I replaced the steering gear and it turns both ways fine now. I also have hydroboost on my truck and my brake pedal feel got better as well. I think there was a flow issue with the steering gear box as my pump would whine as well and it's fairly new. I looked and do not have an Evo on my steering pump..
