Recently purchased my Tahoe and I don't recall ever hearing a compressor turning on. The truck sits and rides just fine altho I do notice when i start her up in the morning and get going i hear a weird creeping noise at low speeds for the first block or so than it goes away and I also noticed after driving on a highway for a while and when i do get off and pull into a parking lot or something i hear the same noise at low speeds (10mph and under). But perhaps thats another problem in itself.

Look under and see if the bladders are busted on the shocks. Mine were and my XL rode fine also, even towed well with the bags ripped and compressor not working.
