Hey all...new member, new owner. Just picked up a all original 2002 Yukon. The stereo sounds horrible! No bass, sounds like a tin can, and volume is horrible. Any ideas where to start? doesn't seem that the radio should be this bad...factory or not! Front and rear speakers work, just sounds like all highs and mids.

Do what I did on all 10 (lost count actually) of the trucks I've bought in this body style; first replace every speaker with good ones, the factory paper cone speakers are junk at best. Updating that cruddy factory radio is also a good move. With the capabilities and price of aftermarket radios along with ease of installation; it doesn't make sense to keep that single disc, underpowered, minimalistic factory radio in the dash.
6.5 speakers up front
5.25 speakers in rear
8" shallow mount sub (if equipped)
For radio
Metra 70-1858
Metra 40gm10
Metra 99-3002

This is great. magic, does this apply to a 2003 Yukon as well? I am thinking of doing a full overhaul including amp/sub and wasn't sure how difficult it is running the rca and power cables. I pick up the truck on Wednesday so haven't been able to scope it out.

To a certain extent. The speaker sizes should be the same but the radio installation accessories will be different. Depending on whether or not it is Bose equipped and whether or not you want to keep it makes a difference in power harness. There are a number of different models from different manufacturers. PAC makes good products along with Metra's Axxess line. You can retain onstar and Bose with the right module. If you are bypassing Bose all together like I did in the Burb, you can use a harness that is directly behind the ac controls. You just unclip it from the sub dash and use the male end. This harness is the factory harness found in all models, Bose is just added to it in Bose equipped vehicles.
Your dash kit will be a metra 99-2003, it should include a kit to install a single din radio and a kit to install a 2-din.
You can use a Metra 70-2003 for your wiring harness but you will have to get switched power from the seo acc junction block behind the parking brake and fuse it. You will also lose retained accessory power (RAP) and warning chime. Another option if you don't care for onstar or Bose but want the RAP, use a GMRC-01. The GMRC-01 will retain RAP and chime but you can eliminate the chime by opening up the module and cutting one of the speaker leads. Metraonline.com will show you everything they have to offer for any particular make/model. Also look into PAC audio.
Your antenna adapter, 40gm10, will also be needed for your 03 if you care for am/fm.
Amps are super easy to install into these vehicles. There is a little cut-out next to the brake pedal where a clutch can be installed, just pull the rubber out and you have a place to drill for your new power wire grommets. I usually use this method if adding a power wire bigger than 8ga or more than one power wire 8ga+. You can easily run RCAs either down the drivers side of the dash (if adding just a sub), or across the inside of the dash to the passenger kick panel if adding multiple RCA cables, once you route them over or under the middle air vent, there is a big metal frame that I always zip tie my RCA leads to.
If the vehicle is XM equipped, you will also see the tuner for it if you run your RCAs that route, it's behind the glove box. You can remove this tuner(or leave it) if adding siriusxm and use the factory antenna by removing the plastic clip around the antenna connector. Just remove the white clip from the yellowish housing and slide the yellow part off. All Sirius and XM antennas work on either tuner.
That should cover most of it. PM me if you need any other help.

Anytime buddy, that's what I'm here for.
His 2002 audio system and wiring is completely different from everything you just described.

Did you happen to read the post before, where I described what to do with the 02? Did you read the post where souper asked about an 03? As someone who owns a 2005 and numerous 1999-2002 GM fullsize vehicles I think I know the difference. Not to mention 10 years in the audio business before switching careers.

also the rear doors are A 6.5" not 5 1/4.

I've had to trim the plastic mounts in my wife's 02 Yukon (along with several others I've installed 6.5s in) to fit the 6.5" speaker. I've had some 6.5s fit without trimming but a 5.25 is what comes out and goes in without trimming. Suburbans/XLs and crew cab trucks are all 6.5 but I know I've had to trim on yukons and Tahoes to fit some 6.5s (not all, but some). Just to clear the air, Ive always installed a 6.5 in the rear doors of tahoes and yukons.
