I have a 2002 yukon 4x4 with the 8.6 10 bolt. I've replaced the unit 3 times. I was recently told one vehicle source to consider a replacement from would be a silverado with the 6.2. It sounded strange but I happen to have a totalled 2011 silverado half ton with a 6.2 and the same gear ratio I need. Will this work without extensive modification

No, one has leaf springs and the other is a 5-link. The Silvy probably has a 14-bolt 9.5" semi-floater, which might be what you want. Get one from a RWD Denali or Escalade of your generation, they should also have the 9.5" but configured to bolt right up to yours. The GMT900 SUVs have a 1 inch wider track and disc brakes but otherwise would also bolt up (RWD Denalis and Escalades). RPO AXN.

The other alternative is an Eaton Tru-Trac differential.
