2003 Yukon NO COLD AIR (I'M MELTING)

A/C seemed to have been going out earlier in the spring (only kicking on sometimes). I stopped driving the truck for about 5 months and now I have absolutely no A/C. I live in Texas so this is killing me!

How can I tell if I'm out of freon or the A/C compressor needs replacement or something else?

BTW I think I've located the A/C compressor and it looks like the middle/face of it is not spinning. With the A/C on I can spin the middle/face with my hand. If this is the problem would I replace the whole compressor or just part of it?

If you`re low on freon the compressor will kick on for a few seconds and go off. It will kick on and off repeatedly. If you have a leak and have no freon it won`t come on at all.

You can try to throw a few cans of R134a in there and see if the compressor comes on again. If you`ve never done it before fill the system with the engine running and the AC on.

I think you may have a leak and they do make a R134a stop leak if that`s the case.

See if you can spin the compressor by hand. If I remember correctly it's low down on the passenger side. If it spins, move to checking the freon.

Also check the stupid stuff- an anecdote: Mine went earlier this year. I checked the compressor and the wheel spun. Checked the freon and it was full.
Then the D'oh moment hit- The AC belt wasn't there. Completely gone. No trace. The belt tensioner had broken, and the belt slipped off. New tensioner, new belt, and I was running ice cold.

If the clutch goes out, it can damage the front bearing on the compressor from excess heat and take out the seal. This will cause a leak and the compressor will not run until the freon is at minimum pressure to satisfy the low pressure switch (after finding location of leak).
