Today my information reader board on the dash read 'low coolant'. I ran to Autozone and picked up a bottle of Dexcool (GM approved orange stuff) and topped off the reservoir, just barely above the fill line. All seemed well for a while until about a mile from home, the thermostat went up to the 3/4 mark. I pulled in the driveway and turned the heat on full blast, a/c off and the temp spiked to the red. I immediately shut the truck off. Mind you, here in OR it's about 25 degrees F.

After reading a ton of forums, I'm lead to believe that it could be as simple as air in the coolant seeing as how the rig never overheated before, even with low coolant. If that's the case, can anyone provide specifics how to bleed?

It's an '03 Yukon SLT with the 5.3 and 255K miles. Its a perfect running truck, extremely well maintained (hypocritical now, considering this post) but wanting to know if anyone has other suggestions as to what the issue could be? With as many miles as it has, a new radiator probably wouldn't be the worst decision. The water pump isn't leaking, clutch fan is fine and no other tics, knocks, leaks, etc. that I can find. Any help is great before I drop a stupid amount of $$$ in the shop.

Since you mentioned no prior overheating, my guess would be the Thermostat stuck for some reason. To bleed the system, leave the radiator level just where you can touch it with your finger, leave the cap off and let it idle for 10/15 minutes, keeping the coolant level where you can touch it. Put cap back on and fill the overflow tank to the correct mark, that should do it. While your there, check that upper/lower radiator hoses are the same temperature by feeling them while it's idling, that shows good circulation. JMHO and good luck.
