Hey guys - I tried searching but didn't have a lot of luck getting results regarding the issue. I'm going to be taking a look at/driving a Tahoe tomorrow morning and potentially putting money down on it... I had heard that the light where the odometer/mileage/shift information is displayed doesn't seem to work..

Do any of you have information on how hard that is to replace by myself or how much it would set me back to get it repaired?

Thanks!

This is a very common problem. My understanding is that it has to do with a soldered connection on the instrument cluster. I believe a few people have fixed it themselves. I have the same issue (mine isn't invisible but it's almost dead) and I plan on having the whole cluster rebuilt because I'm not confident with electrical work or soldering. All new stepper motors + LED's + they will add a transmission temp gauge for about $280 including postage.

I've heard that it's a common problem... which isn't the worst thing in the world, at least I know it's fixable. Looks like a ton of places offer ways to repair it but I don't know if I'll be able to ship the cluster in and not be able to use the vehicle. I live on my own and would need it to get to work unfortunately. Seems like you can't really just order a replacement cluster which seems odd to me.

You can drive it with the cluster removed. Obviously you won't know your speed but you can drive it just fine. You can buy a new cluster but they are pricey ($500+)

These guys will not only repair your cluster they will "upgrade" it to look like an SS or Escalade if that's what you want:

They are a little pricier than Circuit Board Medics though. They do sell new gauges as well.
