Or work on customers older vehicles, when the customer has no clue!!

Not true at the dealership where a friend of mine works. "Customer pay" is always allotted more time (and, therefore, more $$) than warranty work.

More like the manufacturer doesn't pay as much for warranty work; I probably mis-stated how it works. Not necessarily less hours for warranty work, just less of an hourly rate to the tech. The shop rate is disclosed to the customer, and the customer isn't required to use their non-warranty service.
