I have an ‘06 Suburban 1500 Z71 with a shift cable problem. Recently a reputable repair shop changed the GM shift cable saying it was bad. It worked fine before they worked on the truck. They installed a Dorman replacement cable instead of a GM part.

The problem; now it takes a significant amount of force to pull the shifter from Park into gear. The original GM cable was butter smooth. The shop has tried to fix the problem twice now with no success.

Has anyone encountered this situation and if so, what did you find? I bought a new original GM shift cable but I would like to find the cause before installing it myself.

thanks,
G. Fox

Are you putting your foot on the brake when trying to shift it?

Did you climb under to have a look see of the routing of the cable and connections?

Yes, sounds like a routing problem or faulty part. Didn't the shop see about doing another part or will they install your GM cable for free and credit the original part price to you?

I did look at the routing - seems correct. No kinks pinching I can see.

Damn you still fighting this issue man? Can you disconnect the cable from the lever on the trans and try shifting it that way? That will point to it being on the cable side or inside the transmission.

The problem was what I suspected - non GM cable installed by repair shop. I installed a new GM cable from Chevy dealer last week and it works perfectly again.
