I hear a "clunking" noise sometimes when putting into gear from park and almost always hear when going from 2-3 gear. It is not very loud, but just annoying. Have had it to the dealer and trans, U-joints, etc all good! Just took it to the UP Michigan for 400 mile trip pulling 24 foot trailer and no issues...but that noise is killing me! I see some posts related to greasing the slip yokes, but wondered if anyone has had similiar problem and was able to get it resolved. Thanks. I had this in tech info but no one replied.

I know a lot of GM SUV makes a clunking sound when the tranny is moved from park to drive or reverse. Mine makes it too. It's not gonna harm anything so you're good to go there. Now while the car is actually moving may be an issue.

jimmyj,

During a 2-3 upshift, the 2-4 band is released and the 3-4 clutch is applied. The timing of this shift can cause a momentary torque reversal of the output shaft that results in a clunk noise. This same torque reversal can also occur on a 3-2 downshift when the 3-4 clutch is released and the 2-4 band applied. This condition may be worse on a 4-wheel drive vehicle due to the additional tolerances in the transfer case.

This is a normal condition.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me.

Do you drive your truck in auto or 4 wheel drive? I notice more "unusual" noises when driving faster speeds in these settings. Maybe try 2wd for a while and see if it goes away if you aren't.

@ Louis, thanks for your response, but I have also seen posts about this being related to the slip yoke needing to be greased and in some cases replaced with a nickle plated slip yoke. Can you comment? Thanks

Um... Are YOU driving around in something other than 2wd most of the time? If so, why?

jimmyj,

It is a possibility, however, grease on 4WD vehicles is not recommended, as it may cause damage to the transfer case. If the noise can be isolated to the driveline, filing and lubricating the slip yoke may only be a temporary repair.

If you are concerned, I encourage you to have the vehicle inspected by a certified technician. They should be able to offer a more accurate diagnosis.

Nope always in 2WD Kirk.

Good. I remember a post not too long ago where the OP suggested that he was always in "auto," which can't be good for anything in dry situations.

If you have the electronics power steering then it might be your rack and pinion, it make loose like noise in front end and give very small jerks in steering wheel on rocky roads. or if you don't know how to do that I could refer you one of the shop on some Michigan auto repair.
