2007+ Tahoe vs 2011+ Jeep Grand Cherokee

I am coming from a 99 Tahoe and would love to hear the feedback of those who have owned or have a good amount of driving experience with the 07+ Tahoe and the 2011+ Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I am coming from a older Tahoe, so I know the difference is pretty substantial. The 2011 JGC has a very nice interior, the dash and layout, the seats, navigation, pano sunroof, stitched seats, just all seems very nice. Also I am in Texas and the cooled seats are super awesome.

The Tahoe is bigger. I don't need or want the third row, I would take it out. I am a big guy, 6'1" >275lb, so bigger is fine by me, but the Tahoe is also considerably more expensive. I also feel the interior is a generation behind compared to the JGC, and am concerned I would be buying at the end of the life cycle on the Tahoe (new in 2014?) where the JGC is brand new.

I am trying to weigh pros and cons and appreciate your feedback.

Everybody knows that the longer a particular body style has been out the fewer problems it will have. Just compare 2007 Tahoes to 2011 in reliability. As for the JGC, my wife is looking into a new car. Her top 3 choices right now are GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot, and JGC. We looked at a fairly loaded 2011 JGC. It had all the goodies, hid lights, panoramic roof, nav, leather, etc. She hated it. Too many buttons in poorly picked places. No ergonomics whatsoever. The only thing she thought cool was (just like to new Explorer) there's a knob in front of the center armrest for choosing your suspension setting. Unlike the Explorer, your ride height changes based on the setting. To me, that's just another expensive thing to go wrong. We also found the JGC to be surprisingly more expensive than we thought it was worth. Mid to upper 40s, which is definitely Tahoe territory, and the Tahoe is much more truck for the money. After checking out the JGC, she would rather have the Honda Pilot (which almost made me cry). I hate Hondas. I think the 3rd row, which the JGC doesn't even offer, won her over.

2011 JGC Overland (high end, all bells/whistles) with 10-15K miles is about $35-37K used.

2011 Tahoe LTZ with similar miles is about 20-25% more, like 43-45K.

One of the advantages of the Tahoe is that I could buy a 07, 08, 09, 10 since its been out for a long time and save some money. With the Jeep, only 2011 is an option for me because I dislike the old ones.

When you say the Tahoe is "more truck for the money", could you elaborate a bit please? Besides third row seat, which I would remove day 1, can you point out some other items please?

I bought my wife a 2011 JGC Overland Summit 3 months ago. Sticker was $52K, but ended up paying much less due to the incentives. We also looked at a used Escalade, QX56, X5, Q7, GL450.... the Jeep was the best 'bang for the buck.' It has tons of technology that the other models lack and is a true sport utility vehicle. We opted for the 5.7 liter Hemi so we could tow if we need to, and our Summit came with the off road package just in case we wind up at the dunes.

Compared to my Father's 2008 Escalade; our Grand Cherokee is better IMO. The Escalade is still based on the 2007 model so many technology features are not available yet. If you plan on going off road... well maybe a Z71 Tahoe can keep up.

.. I say get the Jeep (if you do not need the third row) or wait until the 2014 4th gen Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade comes out.

"more truck for the money" was just a reference to size, capacity, etc. Btw, like you, I'm a big guy. I'm 6'1" and tip the scales at just under 320 lbs.

The ONLY reason I went Tahoe over the new GC was because I have to tow a 24' wakeboard boat, and the Jeep just isn't big enough (wheelbase wise). Jeep has more power, and will handle just about anything you throw at it. I traded my 2005 Jeep GC on the Tahoe a month or so ago, and while I love the Tahoe, the Jeep was easily as nice..and it was a 2005.

They are nice. Boss got one just like yours. I will say jeep has really moved up in the car world. Very nice inside.
