I have a ticking noise whenever I start the car on a cold start. It goes away whenever I rev it for a little bit. Could it be the lifters? I’ve read it could be a couple of other things, but it seems like the lifters is the most common issue.

An exhaust leak is also very common. Check for any broken or missing exhaust manifold bolts. Also at the flange from the manifold to the downpipe. If you don't have a stethoscope, take something like a half inch round wooden dowel about 18 or 24 in Long, make a fist holding the end of it, but your ear against your fist and place it at various locations. You'll be surprised how much you can hear. Slide it under the intake onto the valley cover.... If it's a lifter you'll hear it there the loudest. Exhaust leak at the manifold will obviously sound louder touching it to the manifold. Be careful with long hair and whatnot over the front of the engine.....

Piston slap is also typical on some. Supposedly harmless according to GM. Look up some videos on piston slap, and compare it to videos demonstrating a valve ticking. Two distinct and different sounds. If it is piston slap, it should be more pronounced during the colder winter months as the engine itself is colder at first start.

i cured ticking at cold startup by checking lifter preload, which determined my pushrods were too long, then installed shorter pushrods.

if it goes away, it's probably a broken exhaust manifold bolt or 2. the just pop off with age. leak when cold and sorta seal up when hot.

video of the noise might help. lifters are the one that's eats the engine. rest are just mostly annoying.

My LS1 ticking w/no exhaust leaks, before I fixed it with proper pushrod length, would go away after cold startup within 5 mins.

My L92 ticking with 3 broke exhaust manifold bolts, before I fixed it with bridge clamps, would go away once it warmed up after driving it for 5 mins.
