200k mile maintenance items?

Hey guys,

Slowly approaching 200k miles and would like to prepare for maintenance.

What are some common items? Most service intervals charts I've found dont even go this high.

Is the timing chain / chain tensioners something I should do?

I plan on inspecting / replacing the following:

- coolant flush
- check trans fluid (just recently replaced the filter)
- plugs and wires
- check brakes
- new shocks / struts
- inspect wheel bearings

Are there any MUST do's for the 5.3?

If you research like I did you will find that GM basically says the timing chain in these engines are good for 200k miles or so.

I replaced my timing chain and tensioner when I dropped the pan to replace the O-ring on the pickup tube and I also replaced the oil pump at the same time since I was already in there.

I used the LS2 timing chain and a Mellings HV/HP pump. In hind sight the HP spring in the pump wasn't necessary as it caused the ECM to think the pressure was too high causing me to jump through hoops to trick the ECM.

The HV pump is standard on the AFM engines... just FYI.

I did all of the above at about 185k miles and I now have 220k miles and no issues.

I recently flushed the transmission fluid via the cooler line method and all is well.

I plan to flush the brake fluid soon just as PM.

Speaking of coolant... I replaced mine when the plastic T-connectors at the firewall for the heater core broke unexpectedly and dumped all of the coolant.

Trying to get enough interest for Gruven to make replacements out of billet aluminum instead of the crappy plastic that cracks and breaks and causes leaks.

Check it out and email Gruven if you want. If not I would definitely replace those with new plastic ones, at least, as PM before they cause you problems.

Thanks for the info! Did you do the waterpump at this time too?

What brand chain did you go with?

I'm thinking about doing the fuel pump too.

Yes on the water pump.

I just bought an OEM GM LS2 timing chain.

I have considered doing the fuel pump as well but the pressure is spot on at 43.5 PSI (Flexfuel) when running according to the data from the OBD port.

Ken, did you just swap the new chain onto your original sprockets? I'm researching AFM delete parts and wanna replace/upgrade the chain but haven't confirmed if it was compatible with the stock sprockets or if this is even a good idea due to wear/slack in the teeth.

Yes I did. The teeth looked good on the sprockets. To be honest the chain looked fine as well but I had already purchased it so I went ahead and installed it while I was in there.
