I have a 2011 Chevy Tahoe Hybrid with 28000 miles. I was driving it on Friday and the check engine light came on at the same time it started making a tapping sound. I drove 1/4 mile to an area where I could park it safely and turned it off. I called OnStar and they ran diagnostics and indicted a cylinder was misfiring. OnStar said I could drive it for 7 days but needed service. I was in the mountains and worried about safety and not damaging the vehicle so I had it towed to the Chevy dealer. The engine did start and it would drive (with the ticking) as the tow truck driver needed to move the car for towing. The dealer called yesterday and said there was no oil and I needed a new engine. The service writer said they checked it and nothing showed on the dipstick, they added a quart, then two more, still not showing on the stick. This seems to be the extent of the diagnostics performed. I never received any warning (dashboard or through OnStar diagnostics) that the oil pressure was low (or potentially low). In fact, the last diagnostic report from OnStar showed only that there was low tire pressure. That is it. There is no evidence of a leak. I park in my garage 100% of the time and there is not a drop of oil on the floor. It just does no make sense to me with all of the diagnostics on the car that 1. there was no oil and 2. I receive no warning except when the light came on with the clicking.
As of now, the dealer is saying that unless I can prove I had the oil changed that 2000 miles ago, the engine replacement will not be covered under warranty. I am really at a loss as to what could have happened and the dealers response so far.
Any ideas or suggestions? Anyone ever heard of something like this happening?
Thanks!
