how do you go about replacing the front running light bulbs
Well…..that’s a marvel of GM ingenuity right there. You don’t really need to remove the tire, but it does give you a little more space. “Loosen front wheel lug nuts” should not be part of the process to replace a light bulb.

So the housing needs to be removed to change the bulb?

To do it by the book, yes.

If you have very skinny hands/arms, you can wedge your hand down in there and get to it, but it is a pain. Particularly the turn signal bulb.

Remove the top 2 bolts on the housing. Turn your wheel all the way inward and remove the 1 or 2 7mm screws and as many push pin fasteners from the front of the fender liner as you need to get to the bottom 10mm bolt. It would help to have someone hold up the liner when you reach in there. A power ratchet works best if You have one since there is less arm movement. Wiggle the housing out. I usually have to push down on the bumper cover some to clear it. You can have it out in 10 mins.

you do not need to remove the wheel, nor even turn it, just remove the one 7mm bolt that is at the about 2 o-clock position while facing the right wheel or the 10 0-clock position if facing the left wheel, pull the liner back by hand and reach inside with a small ratchet and 10mm socket, loosen the one lower bolt. I have done it many many times.
unless you have midget length arms you can reach right in to it. If you can't locate the bolt by feeling for it then just look inside the liner with a flashlight.
I was raised by a blind man so I guess I have learned a couple extra tricks

When I purchased my new-to-me 07 Yukon XL, I replaced my headlights with LEDs, and I found that the previous owner had cut off the tabs on the light housings that connect to the bottom bolt in the wheel well. As a result, I do not have to mess around in the wheel well for that bottom bolt, and the headlight housings are still fully stable.

To remove the light housings, I find it easier to loosen up the bolts on the front nose piece, to allow for as bit more room to maneuver the light housing in and out of the truck body.

I personally think it is a little easier on the Yukons than on the Tahoe/Suburban, but both are a royal PITA. Compared to the simple design on the NBS models, this was a major step backwards.

Since we're talking about bulbs, what are some good choices for my Yukon? I'm not really a fan of whatever bulbs are in there.
