Hi everyone,

I searched all over and found information, but no definite fix. On my 2012 Tahoe PPV I had this occur. While on the highway at 70 MPH, it sputtered and shut off. I coasted over and it managed to get it to start, but it only ran for about 30 seconds, then backfired and shut off. I smelled the rotten egg odor coming out the exhaust and that was all she wrote. I had it towed to a shop and the CEL was for Fuel Pump Control Module (AKA) fuel pump. A couple days days later P0420 and P0430 appeared. The mechanic assumed 02 Sensors, but both gave no indication on the scan tool. Finally I decided to replace both catalytic converters. (I think the backfire destroyed the catalytics.) So far that seems to have solved the issue.

Thanks for following up, and I suspect your hypothesis is correct. Doesn't take much to take out a modern cat.

The rotten eggs was the key that the cats had failed. Cheap Chicom cats will fail in short order.

The fuel pump control module is a computer separate from the fuel pump and its assembly in the tank.
