2022 Tahoe Navigation Screen Question

I ordered a 2022 RST on the 21st. I have no clue as to when it is coming since they said that it would be next week before they know anything due to the holidays.

I am curious about the Infotainment Screen and how it all works. I'm not even sure the salesmen fully understood the thing. My question is do I have to subscribe to a Wifi plan from Onstar to use the Google Maps Navigation as well as the apps and the Voice Controls?

I have an iPhone 13 Pro and I know that I can use Carplay and my Unlimited Plan for that, but if I want to have the built-in features available with the setup, do I need to buy a plan or can I use my iPhone as a hotspot instead?

I'm also assuming that I need to buy, at minimum, the Wifi Plan to use the app to start my truck so my question may be moot since I would likely want that feature, but I'm just trying to get a better understanding of how this works since Chevy's and Onstar's sites seem to lack a lot of detail.

I suspect you’d need to have a plan through OnStar or AT&T (sounded like there’s some others on the forum who’ve been able to activate it on their AT&T plan).

For CarPlay, I can’t get my phones hotspot and wireless CarPlay to function due to how witless CarPlay uses wifi to connect. It would probably be possible to use your phone’s hotspot if you use the cable to connect it up to your phone.

I can't say for sure about the '22 setup but neither factory nav or remote lock/unlock/start with your phone works on our '21 without a subscription to onstar, which I don't want or need. We have the unlimited wifi data plan and that does not make these features work

The salesperson may not have any experience with the system if they have not sold any 22 models yet, but they do have resources available to them they can share or use to educate themselves. I've tried to attach the latest guide for this system for anyone here to view.

This is from the last page of the PDF I attached:

"Do I have to pay for a service plan to use Google built-in apps and services? - Some features of the system require a service plan or trial. This includes Google Assistant, Google Maps and apps on Google Play. Once the initial connectivity period included with your vehicle purchase ends, you will be able to choose from several plan options to enable continued use of those features."

There is a remote access plan available from OnStar if you only want the keyfob in the myChevrolet app that costs $14.99 a month. https://www.onstar.com/us/en/plans-pricing

You should get OnStar for a couple of months. May only be one month. Used to be a whole year. I believe the KeyFob in the MyChevrolet app is good for one year before you have to pay for it.

I don't think you need a wireless subscription for wireless apple car play. Wife's 21 Suburban works fine with wireless apple car play for us, and we've had it for a few months and no more subscription on it anymore.

I have Google Fi phone service which gives you data only sim cards. I then installed a router in the center console. The data just comes off of my normal phone plan so it isn't really any extra. Everything works A+ and my Tahoe is always connected to the router.IMG_20201125_143851.jpg

After the free trial of WiFi expired we did lose wireless CarPlay but I didn’t troubleshoot a lot because we renewed a few days later for an upcoming family trip and when we renewed we got wireless CarPlay back so it seems like you have to have it.

is that a 2022 thing? In my wife's 2021 Suburban wireless apple CarPlay still works fine.

I almost have to think it is. But to be honest I just need to take time to figure that out. I just haven’t worried about it because we still have the onstar WiFi.
