2022 Yukon Trans Issue

My son's 22 Yukon (6.2, 10 speed trans, 54k) was shift oddly and then went into limp mode the other day. He got it to the dealer and after their review, they told him it was the valve body and would need replaced. The first thing that came to mind, did the valve body go because the TC? My thinking was centered on the fact, my 2017 Tahoe (6 speed) did somewhat the same thing and had to replace the trans.
I suggested to him he dig into this further with the dealer to make sure it isn't the TC shedding.

I have done some searching and haven't seen much discussion regarding the 10 speeds having issues. Have there been issues with it like the 6 & 8 speeds?

Any feedback is appreciated.

@NickTransmissions is our resident transmission expert, and he may be able to provide some insight. He hasn't worked on many 10 speed transmissions to my knowledge, but he knows the 6 speed transmission very well.

Valve bodies themselves dont cause limp mode; that is triggered by an electrical/electronic/communication error between trans electrical components and the ECM.

very few 10 spd issues either the gen 1 or gen 2.

the valve body has alot of latch or gain valves that could be hanging up or the corresponding solenoid is malfunctioning.

the gen 2 (2019+) got rid of the gain/latch valves and uses only the "input valves" for clutch control.

you can see this at approx 2:00-4:30 in this video

despite the lame exhaust crossover making pan removal difficult, the GM version of the 10 spd transmission has been substantially better than Ford's version.

GM has a recall out for the valve bodies in the 2021 Yukon. Apparently it’s affected later models so this could have been just a defective one.

Unfortunately the Recall does not currently cover the 2022 models. What GM did was not "Fix" the problem with the recall, they updated the software to detect if there is a problem, then put the vehicle is a "Limp" mode and not allow the transmission to shift above 7th year to reduce the potential of rear wheel lock up. It does appear that GM may have extened the warranty for the valve body problems.

While I have not had my hands on the solenoid connections in these GM transmissions, I have had my hands on solenoid connects in other electronically controlled transmissions and what I had found it the connectors and female terminals were rather fragile and not very robust. I can see where with repeated heating and cooling cycles these female terminals could get loose over time and become intermittent. I also had problems with transmission solenoids in other models that would cause rather harsh and/or delayed shifting. I sent this valve body out for repair and I did not know exactly what the transmission shop did to repair the problem, possibly replaced a worn solenoid(s), but they did resolve the problem.

Some valve bodies have steel spool valves that wear the aluminum valve body bores that some aftermarket companies offer special valve body boring tools to oversize the bore and offer an oversize spool valve, some more advanced shops offer bore sleeving services vs valve body replacements. Unclear if the GM 10 speeds are suffering from this problem or will suffer from this type of problem in the future, just some info about what is being seen in the industry in recent years.

Regardless, OP's Son's vehicle would still be in the powertrain warranty...so should be covered regardless.

Clearly as usual a moving target.

The link you posted is a "Revised" or updated/expanded to include the 2022 Yukon where the link posted previously did not include the 2022 Yukon.

Can't wait until the 2023-2024 are included. Unless something changed, I would guess once the 2023-2024 models get some miles and a similar problem shows up, they may be included.

90,000 GM vehicles, not the light trucks were just recalled for similar 10 speed transmission problems, only cars, not light trucks.

We shall see how long this issue takes to trickle over to the light truck and if the models and years covered are expanded.
