If GM had broken in those L87s on a SpinTron,
then how'd they fail to notice how many hundreds of thousands of them made subpar?

Yeah, you'd think they would've noticed the AMP draw on the driving electric motor being a little high or high a vibration at turning speed (its typical for a spintron to also have vibration accelerometers).

IDK how they missed it ,,, but I'd bet they know by now exactly where, when and how they f-ed up and there is probably a pretty hilarious inter-company memo going around about it.

GM likely spent the absolute minimum possible to build it / initially inspect it,
and are now spending the minimum possible to 'fix' the problem.

Note how they're making L87 owners switch to 0W40 -
GM is literally transferring some of the ADDITIONAL cost of maintaining GM's mistakes to the customer,
instead of fixing / replacing it.
I'd've been more impressed if they'd extended the suspect-L87 warranty to 12 years /180,000 miles.
That'd've been impressive.

On the other hand, despite how many part numbers L87s share with LT1s, it's astonishing
how many L87 owners don't see how the similarities and insist on the differences.
... and there is probably a pretty hilarious inter-company memo going around about it.
By the time the general public learns of this info, they won't be able to apply any of the lessons ...

changing old sooner than later never hurts anything. please do it yourself and buy a filter cutter and inspect it.

on my engines I've built, first oil change of the break in oil after a warm up cycle or 2. and then at 500 miles or so and inspect the filter.

I've only brought 2 new vehicles personally. one was my bike, rode it home from the dealer and changed oil, then broke it in. my ls1 car I put about 75 miles on it, changed oil and it made it's first pass at the 1/4 mile at 250 miles.. engine never gave me a hint of trouble at over 100k when it was stolen. I believe it would still be running good today if I had it

if you care about the engine currently in your truck, I'd change oil, and I would personally go 10w40 not the 0w40 unless it's sub zero starting Temps where you are right now.

cut the filter open and inspect it closely as well, if clean you're good, if you find much of anything, change it again in a 1000 miles and inspect the filter media again. if clean, you're probably good. if you still got metal, try to get a new engine from gm, yours is probably already hurt.

.....CHANGE IT....

Did mine at 800mi. Even if it does nothing real, I'm convinced it will help... ALSO - always use synthetic and always change it before the computer hits 30% remaining (or better)... I can't always remember on my own, so I rely on the computer and usually do it by around 40% remaining. (hey I do it myself and it's $50 bucks)

With a new '25 tahoe with the 6.2, what is the recomended miles to do the first oil change? Dealer says 6000 miles, but I believe the first 500-800 miles is probably the worst on an engine since that is the break-in and when I suspect will have the most debris in the oil. I don't want to change the oil too early but also want to make sure I minimize damage to a new engine.
When I get a new vehicle, I change the oil at 500 miles and then every 3000 miles thereafter. This may not be legal in California.

Dont people say something about using 100% gasoline and no ethanol mix at first on a new L87?
Lake Speed Jr did a video about the differences between 87 & 91.
If I'm ever lucky enough to own a brand new engine, it gets 91 or 93 for the first 5000 miles.

Oil is cheap so change it at 500-800 then do it again at 1k. Better safe than sorry. You would be surprised on how much debris comes out in the break in stage.
