22" spare tire inquiry

After a road trip and seeing numerous people on the side of the road changing tires i have decided to consider using a spare again. i stopped running y spare because it was the original 20" spare and not the same circumference of the 22" wheels. I have a full size 22" rim and tire, anyone running a full size spare? If so did you have to change the spare tire winch? any input on what you are doing for a spare on OEM 22's would be appreciated. thanks

The original spare should've been on a 17" steel wheel with a tire that was close to the original 20" tire diameter (31.9"). I think the spare tire size is 265/70-17, making it 31.6". That .3" difference was deemed close enough by GM engineers, and really, it is since the rear end isn't locked.

The OEM 22" tire size of 285/45-22 is only .2" larger than the OEM 20" size, making it .5" larger than the OEM spare size. I don't know for sure, but I really don't see the OEM spare as being such a tight fit under there that it doesn't have .25" of clearance all around it. I don't think the problem is the diameter of wheel and tire under there, but the way the winch seat passes through the hub bore of the wheel and spans the opening. This would chew up a nice aluminum or chrome wheel. Maybe a transport wheel would be a good option here. They're 22" and plain steel.

just match the overall height of the tire
then use whatever rim you want.

if you want the 22" rim, go for transport, as mentioned above
i have one on my '15 & it fits.. unsure about fit on last gen.

I picked up two blem 22 oem wheels for a great price so im gonna use them. Just not sure about the hoist. I see there are two types.

I don't think the hoist seat would get through the hole. Could probably make a simple adapter from a piece of heavy plate steel with two bolts on each end to pass through the lug holes and hang it by those.

I've never seen the hoist for the 22" wheels but the replacement Dorman is much shorter and covers both part numbers.

I am not sure what happened, but when I bought the truck from the dealer it had three 6-spoke wheels and one 7-spoke (look closely a my avatar). As you can see, the step bar on that side is also bent. I have no idea what the previous owner did. Because I added the Brembos, the 17 spare tire does not work. Therefore, I bought a fourth 6-spoke and today I had the spare replaced with the 7-spoke and a 285/45R22 tire. There were no problems with the hoist support...it went right through the 3 inch center cap in the wheel. To keep from scratching, I bought a heavy duty toilet flush seal to put between the hoist support and wheel.

I now have a 22 inch spare mounted under the truck, which works with my Brembos.

do you happen to have any pictures of it mounted underneath? I’m going to be attempting to mount a spare 26 underneath and my tire is only 1” bigger than yours so I’m curious to see how much extra room you have
