360 fuel gauge and swapping clusters

My fuel gauge on my 97 Tahoe has been dancing for a while. I just used the trip gauge until the fuel pump actually started going. So I figured I'd replace the pump and sending unit with the hopes that would fix the gauge. It didn't...and the gauge has steadily gotten worse until now it will spin all the way down and catch on the oil pressure gauge needle sometimes.

I've also seen where people repair the stepper motor, but the bang for the buck isn't really there. So...I figured I can find a new instrument cluster relatively cheap and swap it.

If I do this, nothing will match my 270K, which I would like to retain. Is there a way to run up the mileage on the new cluster to match the one I plan on taking out? And, for that matter, is there anything special I need to do when swapping these, other than just plugging all the harness wires and such back in?

The odometer can be swapped out and put in the new cluster.

Push the black tabs on the side to take the lens off...



Pry up the gauge face along the edges...





Disconnect the odometer motor harness from the circuit board...



Two T15 torx screws hold the odometer in place. Separate the red clip to the trip odometer. Swap them over and you’re done.

One question - is the red clip to the trip odometer hard to get to or is it sort of "loose" and easily accessed once you unscrew the odometer?

Once you unscrew the odometer, it’ll slide off.

Worst part of this was getting the trip odometer to slide back in!! Well that and starting to "pry" the actual thin plastic face instead of the whole gauge face! Thankfully I stopped (didn't make sense to me!) and looked closer before doing any damage.
