i was wondering if the 4l60e can be directly replaced with a 4l65e in my 1997 tahoe. My trans went (again) after only 4k miles... i believe the front pump went.

thanks

How does a pump go after 4K miles?!

I've read several places that say the 65 can bolt right in.

The LT style 4L60E's (like what is found in your 97 tahoe) have a different input shaft than the LS 4L60's (like those found in the newer trucks). So the 4L65E will not work unless you get a custom torque converter to account for that difference (I believe yank can do this). Besides that issue, it will plug right in and work.

Same goes for trying to put an LT style 4l60e (found on the 96-00 vortecs and Lt1's) on a newer LS engine like a 5.3L. It won't work unless you use this flexplate spacer and longer flexplate bolts.

guy above me is right, i almost completely forgot about the different input shafts... Electrical connectors should all work though, once you have the converter issue solved. Your best bet would be to just call yank, and ask them they are very helpfull

When you mentioned the trans “went again” after 4,000 miles, did that mean that it was a total rebuild to begin with?

I would want to answer the question as to why it failed before jumping off into a different type.

Could be there is something wrong with your setup in the ECM or ? If so, you could fry a new 4L65 as easy as a 4L60………………….. :)

this is actually my 4th trans in this thing thats gone bad... something different has gone wrong every time, from the pump, to clutches, to a broken output shaft. What could be funky with the ecm? and how much would i be looking at for a converter to swap the trans? any idea?

and 95TwinTT- the trans was a complete teardown and rebuild SUPPOSEDLY. I am already questioning after 4k miles if it was not completely rebuilt and the pump was reused.

and what is different about the converter? the bolt pattern for the flywheel? or is it something else?

Doesn't Matter
Unless you've already purchased the transmission, I would suggest going through MonsterTransmission.com. I purchased my transfer case through them.
The customer service I received was out of this world. I will be going back to them when ever I get around to beefing up my transmission.
Just awesome people.

T-Bagg its funny that you should say that. I actually had one of my broken 4l60e trans' laying around and i said what the hell let me rip it apart and figure out what the deal is in one of these things. so i ripped it apart and sure enough the rear planetary and reverse pump or whatever its called was all cracked up. so i figured that when i finally get the money i would get a kit from the people and redo it myself for a nice little side project, and so ill have a spare layin around
