This just started today....Anyone every change one at home??
Or just pull it and pay for rebuild??

This guide from GMT-400 describes the issue exactly.

7. Sudden grinding noise with no prior warning primarily in 2nd gear, behavior in reverse may be abnormal; sunshell is fractured. R&R. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.

The 96 2 door my stepson drives is the sick hoe,not my DD.So he can walk till I get it fixed.

I would not drive that thing under it's own power anymore.

Most likely a sripped sunshell gear, but the spider gears in the planetary assembly can do this too. If you the time/means/confidence, I would just pull it and rebuild it at home. It would be much cheaper that way.

My transmission just blew, the spider gears failed, I'm looking at $1750 in repairs... Just warning you, this can get pricey.

Well I found a local shop that rebuilds with the upgraded internals for $850
and that is with converter and 3 yr 36k warranty.http://yhst-38506762499728.stores.yahoo.net/4ltr.html

And it is parked until repairs are made, this is my 96 2 door that my step-son drives....Not my DD. A guy from work recommended this shop to me.

I rebuilt mine at home. Just about 100K on it and it runs like a champ. It's been a hard 100K too, I don't drive like a lil old lady. It had about 10000 soft miles in the beginning ...

I am seriously considering this option.
