4wd help !

[2003 wifes ride]

Hi everyone I'm new on here. We have a 2003 yukon xl with the service 4wd light coming on. The 4wd works when the light isnt on. When the light is on it wont let you g into 4wd. Only symptom i see when driving in 4wd is a humming "for lack of better words?" When i turn the truck sharply. Def doesn't sound right. Any ideas or if it could be fixed in my garage. I work on my 96 camaro z28 all the time but no experience with 4wd's. Willing to learn and not spend thousands to have a repair shop fix a $50 part. Thanks.

Take it in and have the codes read from the ATC module.

It seems that it's jammed
Try to use the 4wd for about 1 minute drive
And then deactivate it and put your car in reverse for about 15 meter

If you understand how these transfer-cases work you will know that they won't "jam". These cases are electronically monitored and actuated. There is a problem somewhere.

To the OP, don't drive it in 4WD until you can take it to someone who can pull the codes for you. A typical code-reader wont do as these are going to be ATC codes (Cxxxx vs Pxxxx for powertrain codes from the PCM). Transfer-cases are expensive in themselves and the labor to change one out isn't cheap either.

Thanks. I will keep it out of 4wd. Hopefully the code will give us an idea of the problem. I will post the code results. Should get it checked by at least next monday. Maybe it will be something i can fix.

what kind of surface are you drivnig on when its in 4wd becuase the symptoms yer describing sounds like yer drving on pavement while its in 4wd
the font axle is locked in 4wd so sharp turns on pavement will cause yer front end to bind up because one wheel needs to turn more then the other
