lock in as in front axle is engaged. when you gear it into 4wd if you get the indicator that light that indicates 4wd engaged, your actuator is working and is pressing on the shift fork in the front axle. now the fork could be broken but put the entire vehicle in the air with a driver. put it in in 4wd low high and 2wd and observe the drive-shafts and wheel in 4wd both front and rear shafts should be turning as well as all four wheels. in 2wd only rear shaft and wheels should turn. in 4wd if front shaft is not turning something is wrong in the tcase. if it does turn but only one wheel is even moving the front axle shift fork or collar is broken. this can be confirmed with tranny in park and spinning a front wheel the opposite side should be going the opposite direction. always apply the brakes to stop the wheels before shifting the tranny or tcase.

I am having trouble with my 4wd also. I have a 96 hoe with electronic 4wd. I have to hit the 4wd button like 20 times, pull the fuse and place it back in. Then hit it like 20 more times before it flashes on the 4wd button. Then I got to do the same thing with the 2wd button to get it back into 2wd. Then I have to back up roughly 2 miles before the hub releases and I can drive without it clicking. Is it the solenoid on the front diff?

videos of driving backwards 2 miles:popcorn:

so if you hit 4wd hi once it does not respond to input but otherwise indicators do light to reflect its actual operating mode?

and when you say hub release i assume you mean the front axle?

this clicking sound where do you here it from? front axle, transfer case or relay clicking under dash?

also assume you are pulling fuse #2?

next time this happens do not pull the fuse.

perform diagnostics enable sequence in second link if you pull a #3 code and the clicking sound is like the motor relay under dash going off. your t-case shift motor assembly is shot.

also just to be clear this is just happening only in 4wd HI? if trying low you put tranny in neutral first going about 1-3 mph for the case to switch with a big clunk sound?

it isn't all in one shot. I drive forward about 3-4 tenths of a mile, it doesn't release so I hope in the opposite lane and drive backwards to my start point. I keep doing it that way till it releases.

I get no lights when I hit it once or response.

Correct.

It is coming from the front axle. It is predominantly from the driver side. My brother could hear it as I drove down the road by his house.

Yes

next time this happens do not pull the fuse.

I do it while sitting still either in park or neutral to switch to 4hi, 4lo or back to 2wd. It doesn't matter which wheel drive I try to get it to go in, it reacts the same way with the lack of response.

remove and test your front axle actuator by connecting directly to battery and make sure you front axle is has proper gear oil and level. also in the event it is just coincidental check you left front axle drive shafts for tears in the cv boots.
