I am having a problem with my 97 Tahoe. I live in Ohio and it has been a little snowy lately. If I put my vehicle in 4wd ( with the shifter not a button) The 4wd engages and I can get out of my drive. When I get on the road and start to speed up the vehicle is almost uncontrollable. I am constatly fighting to keep it straight. It has newer matched tires, the alignment is good. If I shift back to 2wd it runs straight. I have had 4x4s for many years and never had a vehicle act like this.
Any ideas would be appreciated. I have not checked anything yet because the snow is still up to the running boards.

Sounds like your 4x4 is working great, if you're on patchy snow and ice with bare patches of pavement.

Or maybe there has been an axle replaced and the differential ratios are not matched. Then you have a huge problem.

im guessing a diff got swtiched, either front or rear, and you have 2 different gear ratios going on there..or else your alignment is really ******, but you would notice that in 2wd as well

OR!! One of the front axles is engages and the other isn't ... broken CV shaft or something like that. My old Blazer had auto hubs and steering and driving felt like ... a truck. I put on manual hubs and it was like a big car after. Guess I had one that was engaged all the time, did something similar to yours at times
