at pep boys picking up some supplies, and saw a "tune up" kit for for our V8's. the kit looked like it replaces the distributor cap and rotor, similar to the msd...just want to know if anyone has any input on to what, if any, improvements this will make and would an MSD ignition be a better buy over this "kit" from pep boys. Thanks

IMHO, the factory supplies more than enough juice, nice addition to add on, but worth the money, IMHO, no.

you will LOVE it. I gained about 2 MPG, and power to boot. I removed 100% of TM, it upped line pressure and have alot firmer shifts, etc...
my truck really went from a blant SUV power wise to a totally different truck. Now don't think it's like adding a supercharger or NOS, but it did change how it drives, alot.
Tuning prices vary, depending if you want a traditional mail order tune, a scan cable or an in person live tune if he comes near your town anytime soon. IMHO, a cable scan is probably as good as an in person. I did a live tune, as he was like 2 hours from me, so I made the drive.

In all the mods I have done to mine (lowering, custom paint, rims, exhaust, etc) this made the most fun for 'me'...

The only regret for me, is I am always hesitant to make a pull on something I am unsure of or second guess myself. I am upset i waited a year almost to do it after I heard of Black Bear. I feel I wasted a good year of fun, and more power.

Before when I had carb'd race cars/trucks, it was easy for me to see "oh wow, Holley came out with a new race carb, or aluminum heads,etc.." and make the switch. But changing all the electronics and computer settings in my daily driver, I was hesitant.

Now it's easy for me now, to tell you to make the pull and get it done. But i'm just being open with you, on my personal actions and response from it.

The 5.3 has no distributor. You were looking at an older chevy V8 tune up kit.

The factory coils are capable of supporting 600+ horse. No need to buy MSD.

If you want to upgrade your ignition system buy a good quality spark plug wire. everything else is fine.
