my 01 Denali is also like that. i thought something might be wrong since my other vehicles don't seem to idle that low. but seems to be the general consensus. i had replaced the plugs & wires already, but haven't cleaned the throttle body yet. i know there is a cheaper battery in my truck (that the previous owner put in), but i didn't think it was that old.

Mine idles down to 500 and even 300 at a stop sign. 500 or less is where it likes to idle. 300 causes it to stumble when I get on the gas. I seafoamed it and it generally fixed the 300 rpm issue, but it still runs at 500.

I never followed up with this... pulled the terminals off the battery and there was killer amounts of corrosion. Actually going down inside the cable coating as well. Cleaned terminals... cut and replaced cable ends... problem gone.

550-600 sounds about right, I have looked at several factory tunes from the pcms on these engines and they all seem to have that idle speed setup right around there. You could always have someone change it I guess.

But volts are up at 14ish.... So thats what got me thinkin maybe idle is to low... Altho i havent checked while acceletationg...

The flickering and high voltage should key you in. It points to a battery issue. Why? The alternator is charging like hell to keep up, and the ripple is the lack of buffer. Alternators put out dirty electricity and the battery acts as a buffer, take it away or it is weak and you lose the buffer zone and that nasty stuff starts showing up in your electronics in your vehicle.

Generally 550 in gear, 600 in P/N with a 50 bump if the AC is on. This is near universal now, with all manufacturers following very similar guidelines. No reason to change it, if it won't idle there you've got something else wrong.

Glad you got it figured out.
