6.2 Durability, Oil, Lifters, AFM and more

Had a 14 Escalade that we owned until last summer. Disabled AFM when we got it via BlackBear tune, it treated us fairly well for 3 years, from 30-75k miles.

Replaced with an 18 Expedition Platinum that has been nothing but problems. Right now it’s in the shop getting new timing chains and cam phasers at 74k miles (under extended warranty), in part because the previous owner (we purchased CPO + warranty) didn’t change the oil frequently
Enough. As soon as we get it back, it’s getting traded in.

Looking at a couple CPO Escalade (‘18-20) and 6.2 Denalis. Under 50k miles. Many are showing oil change history of 7500-10,000 miles. Is that frequent enough? I’m happy to do 5k OCI with synthetic While I own it, but if it’s already got damage, I’ll keep looking.

I am Happy to disable AFM on the new ride, just need to know how robust this next Gen 6.2 is, how picky it is about oil changes, etc. Can’t afford to get myself into another problem-child here ;)

I would not be worried about the current oil change history. Like you, I change my oil every 5k miles, just because. I would not expect the 18-20 6.2 motors to be any less robust than the 14 motor.

it's CPO that means 100k warranty who care's that's better than purchasing new

Yeah, but I’d rather not deal with fixing something a previous owner neglected, which is why I asked how sensitive the 6.2 is to oil changes and what’s considered frequently enough. :)

I change mine every 3k, check the carfax or with any gm dealer with the vin they can look it up and see if it has had dealer service

Every 6500-7k for my 2018 6.2. Typically 25%-10% oil life depending on where I'm at with road trips.

I don't like those extended oil changes on that motor. An old tech LS motor would probably be golden but not the late builds. Good that you are seeing the oil change numbers on the CPO machines but I'd avoid any with those numbers. The warranty is a good plus but the aggravation and possible having major engine work done would turn me against it. That's just me.

I honestly think its as much about quality of oil and filter as anything else. I have not had any issues with my GM products but I do not skimp on oil or filters and change often even with high end oil. My Vette loves Mobil 1 and my Yukon loves Royal purple, go figure. Always synthetic media filers with the right bypass valves. Most cheap filters allow unfiltered oil to bypass the filter media and that is what ultimately destroys the lifters.

Ran Royal Purple in my Suburban, AFM deactivated, lifters still kamakazied. 5.3L.

Bought it CPO, got GM to extend the warranty another two years from original CPO warranty.

If under 50K with those change intervals, I wouldn't worry about it. Closer to 100K, and you're building up enough sludge and debris that could interfere with the operation of the AFM/DFM system. Buy the truck and change oil every 5K from that time on, and you'll probably be okay. Lots of Gen V 6.2's running around with 300K+ on them.
