Just had my engine rebuild yesterday. Is this a Normal noise after driven 80 miles. Like a small ticking noise. Does it still need to break in. I’m just worried it’s not done right after all the money I paid

Check to see if an exhaust manifold bolt snapped and is missing. Checked for an exhaust manifold leak, as well as the flange or the downpipes connect.

It's only normal for the new lifters to make a ticking sound at first startup, usually just a minute or two until they are fully pumped up with the oil pressure.

Did a shop rebuild this? If so, take it back to them. Often it's the preload by not measuring correct pushrod length. Very important on a rebuild where distances change from surfacing the head,. If a shop did this rebuild, ask them if they used genuine GM lifter trays. Aftermarket ones are problematic. I would also want to find out what lifters they used. There's a lot of very cheap aftermarket made in China ones.

.... And if they pulled the motor, did the rebuild and reinstalled.... Don't even bother checking for exhaust leaks. It's 100% on them too fix whatever the problem is. And no, it's not part of a normal break-in to still have the ticking noise.

A video to back up what you’re dealing with and always have someone with you (your witness) when you’re speaking to the person about the tick.

It could be as simple as they didn’t soak the lifters long enough, or at all. Worst case scenario the motor was started without prelubing all the bearings.

It’s on you to have the truck started when cold to demonstrate the tick. HARD No, it’s not normal for a new motor. Do not accept it back until it stops.

I had a dealer do that to my SAAB. It sounded horrible. I made them replace the lifters with new, prelubed ones before I’d drive it away. Obviously you probably got the truck when warmed up so you had no knowledge it was occurring.
