You past guidance has changed the way I operate my 6L80 when towing heavy as well. I now run it in 4th @ 65mph on the highway all day long.
I'm curious, do you know the ratio on 4th?

Im not @Geotrash but the 4th gear ratio is 1.15 to 1...most late model clutch to clutch transmissions dont actually have a direct drive gear.I'm curious, do you know the ratio on 4th?

For negotiating grades, you want some underdrive. Mostly level grades and loads within the vehicle's limits, towing in 5th (an overdrive gear) is fine. Just my opinion and what I would do...still the best gear to tow in thou huh.
That's the main reason. We have lots of rolling hills here as we work our way up on, and back down from the Piedmont for the Appalachians. If I didn't keep it in 4th, I'd be up or downshifting every 20-30 seconds or so. If I'm on a long flat section where I know I can easily hold 5th at modest power, I'll click the range button up one gear. For negotiating grades, you want some underdrive.
