Those rear ends didn't handle abuse well. Not saying that's what you did. A one wheel peel can cause that. Slipping one wheel and then catching on instant traction can do that as well. I saw a number of them get rebuilt in my earlier mechanic days.

Luckily parts are readily available as are whole axles.

What does your magnet look like on the diff cover? I had my rear end eat itself on my 2 door, and the magnet looked like a metal Christmas tree!
