98 Tahoe CV Axle

My wife shifted her 98 Tahoe from 4 high to 2wd with the wheels turned full lock to the right when the joints were in a tight bind and the vehicle would not move forward anymore. This push of the button released a lot of tension very quickly. She had been driving in 4Hi for about 30 miles before this happened. Since that time there is now a vibration and sound, I believe from the passenger side that is similar to a bad tire. The tires are relatively new and I believe the noise is the cv joint but before I replace the axles I wanted to check in here and see if it might be anything else like a bearing or??? Any help would really be appreciated. Also the vehicle has about 150k on the odometer, is it best to just replace both axles at the same time? I can get them for about $75 a piece is that a good price? they are new not remans and have no core charge. Any brand to stay away from? Thanks again for any help... Brian

A-1 Cardone's are typically popular replacements for axles on anything.Moog is better if you can find one. Only replace what is broken. Yo can jack up that wheel by the lower control arm, grab the tire and give it a good shake to check bearings.

I know for a fact that A1 Cardone is ISO 9001 certified. That rating isn't just handed out. That means they are one of the best remanufactures. Remember, remanufactured is not the same as rebuilt. Remanufactured is better. Moog makes good stuff, but I've never seen a cv axle from them.

If that 30 miles in 4WD was on dry pavement, that could cause some issues. The 4wd systems in these trucks are only designed to be used in snow/mud etc. The dry pavement puts a LOT of strain on the front suspension especially during sharp turns. I would jack it up and give the tires a shake like sunlit said. If they're fine, then I'm betting a C/V shaft went bad. If thats the case, I would get a set of Cardone's and replace both just to be safe/ avoid the work at a later time.

Thanks Guys, Yes unfortunately it was all driven on dry ground, I take most of the blame here for not really teaching her much about it. I wasn't really near as worried about the drive as I was the final unloading of all that force though. Yes , I've used MOOG as much as possible but also have never seen them offer up an axle for this truck. As soon as my ground dries out a little I will get a jack under it and shake everything down and maybe even see if I can spin the wheel and give it a listen. I was under the impression that CARDONE also sold new components as well as remans. Anyway, I am of the same school of replace them both while your in the neighborhood. Thanks to all again, I will post any findings and let you all know how it works out
