Hello All, Been lurking for awhile as I've just purchased a 99LS w/ 4WD. Got a decent deal on it at $2700, and it has 203K on the odometer.

I have just started to notice when cruising on the highway, it seems to search for a gear. At around 50, it kind of bounces from 1100-1500 RPM. Is the tranny going to need a rebuild? Are my wife and kids safe riding in it?

I've done alot of searching for complaints similar to this condition, but have seen nothing.

Thanks

Transmission Fluid

Fluid level looked good (if anything it may have been a little bit on the high side). Fluid condition - looked like it just came out of the bottle, and smelled like new transmission fluid.

Is it constant? Does it feel like the transmission is slipping out of gear? Pull the dip stick and check the fluid again. Is there any small black particles on the stick?

If it's slipping, clutch packs are going out. You'll need a rebuild.

If it's a electrical issue, might be a VSS or something. Would need to start checking everything over to see what your issue is.

Hmmmm...torque converter not locking properly (?) Check engine light on yet?

Could be the valve body issue. It's somewhat common on the 4L60E.

If it's doing that under load, it may actually be normal and you're just not used to it. At 50mph flat level cruise, when the torque converter locks up the revs will drop to just above 1,100rpm (I figure with that revs you have the 3.42 gears) and when you put extra load on it (ie, going up a hill) it will unlock the tc allowing the revs to climb and make more power. Experiment with it and see if you can see what I'm talking about.

Tranny woes

No check engine light at this point.

Maybe I am just not used to it? It does appear to shift back and forth alot though. I noticed it again at 65 mph.

Jennek is on the right track, it sounds like a lockup issue
