If you decide to drain the fluid, make sure the fill plug comes out first so you know you can get more fluid in.

Referring to B-train's post.....This has been done. We have now ordered a new axle and clip.
That is what is going on.I honestly haven't had one of those apart in quite some time. So from what I read your right side axle will move out of the axle tube and not allow the 4wd actuator to engage it? If that is truly the case I'd pull it apart and have a look see. Can't say I've ever seen this, usually the little rings hold the axles pretty good.
