I just picked up a 99 Yukon, and the tailgate will not open. The glass liftgate opens, and the lower handle operates, and I can hear the actuator operating when I use the clicker. I think the plastic retainer in the mechanism has disintegrated. Now, how do I get the *** gate open to remove ithe interior panel?? Thanks in advance!

Not sure on the tailgate but on my barn door I had to remove panel from the inside and open to find out the hook from the actuator came a loose from the handle, a lil duct tape and it's been holding for two years now.

Yes, I need to get the panel off, but I need to open the tailgate first. Catch 22

this may or may not help, I have barn doors on my Tahoe and the side with the handle would not open up when I first got it had to use a screwdriver to pop it open ended up taking the panel apart and spraying it with WD-40 and haven't had any problems since

haven't had mine apart but if its the same style as a normal pick up you should theoretically pull the trim off around the handle and find the two rods that go to the side latches. pull them to the center and it opens. ( if thats the problem.)

have seen several trucks come in a work that have destroyed handles. has always worked so far!

Mine did the same thing, and it ended up being the linkage getting out of adjustment. Just crawl in the cargo area with tools and take the panel off, you should be able to get to all the screws on the plastic piece. Then there is another panel to get through, but that is far easier. Then pull on the linkage toward the center (it is just like a pickup) and voila! Little bit of grease and adjusting the rods is all you need for trouble free operation from then on.

I think, if you have a decent size screwdriver, you can use it to manually move the latches themselves by prying them while someone else pulls on the handle.
