The harbor freight one's aren't that bad. I've had mine for a couple of years and they work pretty well. I've also had some really good high quality gauges at work, and honestly, for the price of the HF one's, it's not too bad.
Also, I'm with Sunlit, if you are only spending $150 on all that, might as well budget for all the parts again next year. Buy something with some descent quality parts and get another 15 years out of it.
I'm not spending $150 on gauges. Maybe if I was a mechanic.....
Just had it professionally evacuated, recharged, and they used leak detector. I was only 1/2 pound low on freon. He said that the reed valves were messed up and that the only leak was a small leak at the compressor itself. I guess I'm going to order a re-man compressor kit. After all, this truck has 289,000 miles on it lol
Well I didn't go for the cheap I kit.
Tonight I Installed a new compressor and orfice tube, from auto zone. I was going to replace the dryer too, but the line closest to the firewall was seized and wouldn't budge. I pulled a vacuum, and placed 44oz of 134a and 11 oz of oil (as stated on the sticker on the dryer). My front a/c is now great (41 deg center vent at idle). However, my rear air temp was 74. The ambient temp was 78 at the time. My low side was 25 psi and my high side was 175 psi at idle. Any idea why my front vents are blowing ice cubes, but my rear ac is only a tiny bit below ambient temp? Is 44 oz the correct ammount of freon for a 1998 yukon with rear air? Thanks
I added the extra freon but it didn't make a difference in the rear air. At 95 degrees ambient temp, my front ac temp is 53 deg, my rear vent temp is 105 deg
