That sounds like something I should look into because I would like to become more self sufficient with my truck

Here is the deal, grab yourself a Haynes or Chilton manual and red about it. Take it one step at a time, give yourself plenty of time to do it. Going to change the oil for the first time grab your manual go out there and identify all the parts you are gonna touch. Drain bolt, filter, filler cap.
Alright now go get your tools, socket, oil filter wrench. Not block out like 2 hours to do it, make sure you got plenty of day light and no distractions. Now start at step one and just take your time. It might seems daunting but once you break it down its not bad.

Also, 2 hours is MORE than enough time but if its your first time, don't rush it. Take your time and do it right and learn something.

Just had my trans pan dropped w/ fluid and filter changed (my tahoe has 122,000 miles). I talked to multiple mechanics who specalize in transmissions and they said absolutley DO NOT flush your transmission, it just stirs up the dirt and particles and can damage your trans. It is necessary to drop the pan and change the filter. Like the other guys said, you can damage your trans by changing the fluid if it hasnt been changed for a long time, so maybe you could find out when the trans was last changed?

I bought my Tahoe in Dec. I wasn't a member here but wish I had read about all this before, 1-11-10. While driving to work truck shifted from 1st to second but went into a high rev then to 3rd, well didn't think anything of it. Onee I got to work and parked I tried to back up and nothing.. So I thought maybe the Auto 4W was acting up. so switched to 2WD still no luck. The truck would drive forward but no reverse and would rev high between 1st and 3rd .
Long story short took it to AAMCO found out no reverse and no 2nd gear, and need to replace the sun shell, whatever that is. And living here in the Seattle area thats gonna leave a mark in the wallet..
So by all means get a transmisson check if your buying used.

One thing about tranny flushing is I would keep that to just transmission shops or actual dealers. So much can go wrong with a flush, specially if its just some stop and lube place I wouldn't have them touch my Hoe with a 10' pole. They barely can handle doing a oil change let alone do anything else right.

I've had nothing but nightmares with lube shops...Took my 91 5.0, has NO- Cats, smog pump, slammed to the ground with a Griggs Pro-Challenge racing suspension. I was out of town with the car and needed to make a 1000 miles run across the good ol' USA and wanted to have the oil changed, So I was forced to goto a lube shop...What a joke...first of all this car is so far past street legal it's not even funny, so I'm sitting in there making sure they put in Valvaline Synthetic and not Pensoil, and this joker comes in and says I need wiper blades and my serpentine was getting worn out, and my tranny is low on fluid. I said, your so full of shit it's not even funny...I said first of all the car doesn't even have wipers on it, Secondly...that belt is brand new, and I'd love to see them firgure out which one it is, took me two weeks to cross reference which one belonged on it since I've moved and rearranged the assessories, Thirdly...that tranny's not low, its a Tremec 3550 TKO and you dont just fill it to the hole...I told the guy, change the f-n oil so I can get out of this joke of a place...

Change all the fluids, just don't do a trans flush.

If your transmission fails from changing the fluid, you were driving on borrowed time anyway. Hell, at 187k, you are driving lookng at a new trans pretty soon.
