If i was heading down hill... would it burn more gas by putting it in neutral and just coasting or if i left it and drive? I think coasting in neutral would consume less gas but some friends think differently.

It seems to me that when you leave it in Drive and coast, you're still using engine compression to slow you down, and having the pistons going up and down at 2k rpm will take more gas to operate than an engine in Neutral going at 900 rpm would use.

i was thinking of this the other day.. Now in the same sentence you had above "destructo", when you go to put your truck/car back into drive, do you rev the motor up to around where it would be in drive, or do you just shift it straight into drive without touching the gas pedal?

I'm pretty sure this theory has already been debunked with lots of chatter about volumetric pressure, etc. but I can't find the article I'm thinking of. Also, I might add that with our electric torque converters, the torque converter handles the load between the engine and transmission very efficiently. If mileage is that important to you, you're in the wrong rig, my friend. Might I suggest a Vespa? :)

well your engine will be at idle, But the small about of fuel money you save is eventually lost due to using your brakes more to stop. ON a steep hill this can be dangerous as well as you can over heat your brakes since you dont have the engine there to help slow you down.

Yes...we all know that tahoes....pretty much have the best brakes out there....

Lol, but since I do a fair bit of mountain driving I've tried this and there is no appreciable difference.
