First, an NHRA dragster has a completely different engine often supercharged and 4000 hp....running on Nitro....air box would not allow that and choke the engine. We have 300 hp - at the rear wheels...

The airflow has pulses even in the airtube. Its all connected.

The extra resonator tubes are primarily for sound.

Now days, Top Fuel runs at about 11,000 to 12,000 HP...... Hell.. it takes 300 + HP just to run the blower!!

Big air in, big air out. An air box will get sucked into and pucker up into a handfull of litter!

Stock air filters? Sure, on stock set-ups. Modify the air pressure ( supercharger, etc)? Sure...then modify the intake.

Talking about a few horsepower..... Uh, in the traffic we drive in? Yea,...right......

I can't tell you how MANY street & race tuners told me, " Change the stock set up? - Do you know how much engineering was put into that part?"

IMO.... If you want to make your system "pretty" on a stock set up, that is fine.
I do like a nice intake growl....

( I remember my Dad's great old 1969 Buick Sport Wagon ( 400 cid)... When I floored it, the only sound was from the exhaust... Sounded like a broken air hose !! Talk about a restricted intake/exhaust)

All the horsepower cannot even be put to the ground. View attachment 242690

Dale Armstrong told me " Engines don't know anything about going from here to there.... It's an air pump that spins around. I build it to last 4 seconds."

( I took that pic of the Bud King - Buick Reatta at burnout, in Pomona)

May he rest in peace, he battled a disease called Sarcoidosis, just like I have been for the last 5 yrs, it's a battle of attrition because you can't beat it, you just try and stay one step ahead of it. Among all his accomplishments I give him making it to 73 yrs old his best and I sure as hell hope to follow in his footsteps !

I had a '93 Cadillac STS... Dale saw it then showed off his 1958 Cadillac also with a Northstar engine at the rear lot of Bernstein's shop.

He would laugh about winning bets if the Funny Car body was longer than the height of the ceilings in the shop. Dale said, " You didn't realize how long the body was until you could stand it on it's end".....
I asked Him, " With today's technology, how is it to compete?".
Dale said, " It is as hard to compete today, as it was in the old days - I just improvise.....But my goal is to DOMINATE the competition ..not just run well".

What a down to Earth guy.... I was blessed to know him.
